Year 6 Transition Summer School

About our Year 6 Summer School

We understand that making the move from primary to secondary school can be daunting for pupils, and our Summer School aims to help the children to begin to familiarise themselves with our school site and some of our staff, as well as providing an opportunity to meet some of their new cohort.

Each day includes a number of different activities, and we place the children in activity groups based on which Tutor Group they will join when they move up in September. The adults are mostly school staff and the activities take place across the school site. We hope this will help the children to begin to form friendships and find familiar faces, and places, at the start of term.

The activities have an educational element, but the focus is on having fun and getting to know the school in a more casual setting. Children and staff alike wear comfortable clothes appropriate for the activities, giving a less formal atmosphere.

Please request a place at Summer School using the link below.

Dates will be allocated towards the end of May and payment is via ParentPay, once these accounts are setup (usually after May half term). An email will be sent once the dates are added to your account for payment.

Any later applications for spaces will be processed as soon as possible after your request is received and you will receive an email when they are added to ParentPay for payment.

Please contact Mrs Jenkins on transition1@kings-winchester.hants.sch.uk if you have any queries relating to Summer School.

Testimonials

A selection of testimonials from parents of children who have attended Summer School in previous years:

“It’s really an excellent introduction to life at Kings. Especially meeting teachers/staff and getting to know the layout of the school.”

“A great settling in day full of fun activities. Relaxed my child into attending school as they became familiar with the teachers, school grounds and even just the getting to and from school journey.”

“Love the dedication shown by staff in ensuring all new students feel welcomed and familiar before starting at Kings. Thank you so much!”

“A great way to take away the apprehension of starting school by meeting teachers and meeting other Y7s. The teachers put together a great programme for the day and made it a lot of fun.”

“It is a great way of easing into a new environment and making friends, especially if you did not join as part of cohort from same primary school.”

“To begin with my daughter was very hesitant to go to any of the summer school days. We persevered with her and initially she was very reluctant to go. She went without any of her friends.

When we arrived at the school she was very quiet and reserved, but one of the teachers explained what was going to happen and that she was going to be in her group.

When I explained that she was really unsure about coming to this the teacher really spent a few minutes getting to know my daughter and made her smile.

When I collected her at the end of the day my daughter came out and so full of excitement about what she had done in the day and that she had met some new friends and knew someone who was going to be in her form group.

She had such an amazing day that she then asked if she could return the next day as they were doing something that she was really interested in.”
